Data Science —
Bachelor of Science Program

Bachelor of Science in Data Science

Have you always been interested in mathematics and science? If you are fascinated by the mathematical analysis of information, our data science degree can help you become well versed in statistics and computer programming, preparing you for a variety of careers.

As a student in our data science program, you will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to execute effective mathematical analysis in finance, economics, biology, social sciences, business, and data science. Students will gain experience in programming for data compilation, drawing data-based conclusions, modeling techniques and strategies, presenting compelling quantitative narratives, and more.

This program includes two concentration tracks:

  • Interdisciplinary Studies: Under department advisement, this concentration lets students design a unique program of study that crosses disciplinary boundaries with 12 credit hours in relevant studies from other disciplines.
  • Big Data: Students of our big data training concentration will focus on learning and developing programming-based solutions to storing, mining, cleaning, filtering and ultimately analyzing extreme volumes of data.

Upon completion of the B.S. in Data Science degree program, students will be able to:

  • Identify and collect information needed to define problems that require quantitative solutions.
  • Translate information between field-related contexts and mathematical frameworks.
  • Execute mathematical and computer programming processes with proficiency.
  • Formulate, justify, and evaluate data-based decisions.
  • Design professional and compelling presentations of quantitative information.

A STEM-Undergraduate Degree Program

To help address a shortage of qualified workers in science, technology, engineering, and math, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) keeps a list of STEM topics that it periodically updates. Programs like our BS in Data Science—which explores the application of scientific principles, mathematical theories, and computational techniques to analyze and interpret data—qualifies for that list by providing a deeper understanding of relevant STEM fields.
